Good inflow into TB dam raises hopes

  • The very good inflow into the Tungabhadra dam at Hosapete during this monsoon has given hopes to farmers in the Tungabhadra command area spread over Ballari, Koppal and Raichur in the State and also in three districts of Anantapur, Kadapa and Kurnool of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, of early release of water in the canals for taking up cultivation.
  • As on 1st July morning, around 35.436 tmcft of water was stored in the Tungabhadra dam with around 49,424 cusecs inflow taking the level of the reservoir to 1,610.10 feet as against the full reservoir level of 1,633 ft.
  • On June 30, the inflow into the dam was around 25,036 cusecs. Last year, the inflow on July 1 was 14,753 cusecs and on June 30, 14,753 cusecs.
  • During the second fortnight of June, owing to good rainfall in the catchment areas of the Tunga and the Bhadra, the dam has received increased inflows for about a week.
  • Later, it diminished with the inflows being around 6,000 cusecs to 7,000 cusecs.
  • During the past couple of years, the dam has not seen surplus due to weak monsoon and failure of post-monsoon rainfall.
  • Farmers organisations have been demanding early release of water and have urged the authorities concerned to convene a meeting of the Irrigation Consultative Committee to finalise the date of release of water into the canals.
  • Early release of water, according to experts, would not only help the commencement of agricultural operations during the kharif but will also ensure that kharif did not overlap into rabi. On the other hand, early release of water would enable enhancement of utilisation of water from the dam.
  • Though the dam surpluses every year, since inception (barring during the distress years of less than 10 years), utilisation has been far below the allocation of 212 tmcft by the Krishna Waters Tribunal, mainly due to reduction in the storage capacity of the dam owing to silt formation over the years.
  • The original storage capacity of the dam was 133 tmcft which now stands at 100 tmcft.
