- LM Singhvi committee recommended the celebrations and setting up of Pravasi Bharatiya Bhavan
- First celebrated in 2003
- Since the centenary year in 2015, the format was revised for the meeting to be held once every two years
- Organized by Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India
- Why January 9 – Commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India
- Significance of the celebrations :
- Remember the favours and contributions made by Non-Resident Indians to the welfare and development of the nation
- Provide an important platform to engage and connect with the overseas Indians and to enable the diaspora to interact with each other
- Theme 2023 : “Diaspora: Reliable partners for India’s progress in Amrit Kaal”.
- During 2023 celebrations
- Commemorative Postal Stamp: “Surakshit Jaayen, Prashikshit Jaayen” to underline the importance of safe, legal, orderly and skilled migration released
- First-ever Digital PBD exhibition with theme : “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav – Contribution of Diaspora in Indian Freedom Struggle” held
Pravasi Bharatiya Samman
- Highest honour conferred on a Non-Resident Indian, Person of Indian Origin; or an organisation or institution established and run by them
- Award is to commemorate the contribution of the Indian diaspora to create a better understanding of India abroad, support India’s causes and work for the welfare of the local Indian community
