GRAND SLAM
- Achievement of winning all four major championships within a calendar year
- The four major tournaments, also known as the Grand Slam tournaments, are:
- Australian Open: Held annually in Melbourne, Australia, usually in January.
- French Open (Roland Garros): Held annually in Paris, France, usually in May and June.
- Wimbledon: Held annually in London, United Kingdom, usually in June and July.
- US Open: Held annually in New York City, United States, usually in August and September.
- To achieve a Grand Slam in tennis, a player must win all four of these major tournaments in a single calendar year. This is a rare and prestigious accomplishment, as it requires consistent success across different playing surfaces (hardcourt, clay, and grass) and various conditions.
- Legendary players like Rod Laver, who achieved two calendar-year Grand Slams (1962 and 1969) in the Open Era, and Steffi Graf, who achieved a calendar-year Grand Slam in women’s singles in 1988
- Winning all four Grand Slam titles consecutively but not within the same calendar year is often referred to as holding a “Non-Calendar Year Grand Slam” or a “Serena Slam” in the case of Serena Williams, who accomplished this feat in 2002-2003.
- In addition to the calendar-year Grand Slam, players who have won each of the four Grand Slam titles at least once in their career are said to have achieved a “Career Grand Slam.”
