NEWS – Indian Space Situational Assessment Report (ISSAR) was released  by ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Growing Space Object Population
    • Indicative of increased accessibility to space technology.
    • Reflects diverse applications of space tech in daily life.
  • Space Objects in Orbit
    • More objects added in 2023 compared to previous years.
    • 3,143 objects from 212 launches and break-up events in 2023 vs. 2,533 from 179 launches in 2022.
  • On-Orbit Break-Up Events
    • Five major events in 2023, adding 69 fragmented objects as debris.
    • Resulted in a net increase in space debris by the end of 2023.
  • Indian Satellites and Debris
    • 21 satellite re-entries by 2023, with 8 in 2023 alone.
    • 82 rocket bodies from Indian launches in orbit by 2023.
    • Some debris from PSLV-C3 still in orbit.
  • Close Approach Alerts and CAMs
    • ISRO’s analysis and collision avoidance maneuvers (CAMs).
    • 23 CAMs in 2023, reflecting increased congestion in outer space.
