NEWS –  Four-Horned Antelope recently sighted in Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve

FOUR-HORNED ANTELOPE

  • Species Name: Tetracerus quadricornis
  • Size: Small bovid antelope, smallest in Asia
  • Distribution:
    • Endemic to India and Nepal
    • Range from Himalayan foothills to Deccan Plateau in India
  • Habitat:
    • Found in open, dry, deciduous forests in hilly areas
    • Prefer areas with grass cover and close to water bodies

Physical Features

  • Yellowish-brown to reddish coat
  • Slender with small legs and short tail
  • Four horns: two between ears and two on forehead (males only)

Behavior

  • Diurnal and solitary
  • Can be seen in loose groups of 3-4

Conservation Status

  • IUCN Red List: Vulnerable

  • Area: 2,339 sq km
  • Seventh tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh
