NEWS – The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH) as a WHO-Collaborating Centre (CC) for “Fundamental and Literary Research in Traditional Medicine.”
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INDIAN MEDICAL HERITAGE (NIIMH)
- History and Establishment:
- Formerly known as the National Center of Indian Medical Heritage (NCIMH).
- Operates under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.
- Established as the Upgraded Department of History of Medicine on September 26, 1956, under the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
- Transferred to the Government of India on February 14, 1969, due to its significant national and international importance.
- Location:
- Located in Dilsukhnagar, Hyderabad.
- The only institute of its kind in Southeast Asia.
Mandate
- Literary Research and Documentation:
- Revival and retrieval of texts from ancient manuscripts and rare books.
- Search, collection, descriptive notes, editing, and publication of rare medical manuscripts/books on AYUSH.
- Documentation of Ayurveda Encyclopedia.
- Establishment of a museum on the History of Medicine.
- Maintenance of a referral library on AYUSH Systems of Medicine and modern medicine.
- Digital and Research Portals:
- AYUSH Research Portal.
- CCRAS-Research Management Information System.
- National AYUSH Morbidity and Standardized Terminologies Electronic Portal.
- Development of Terminologies:
- Development of WHO International Terminologies of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani.
- Development of SNOMED CT National Extension for Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani.
