NEWS – President Droupadi Murmu renamed ‘Durbar Hall’ to Ganatantra Mandap and ‘Ashok Hall’ to Ashok Mandap

DURBAR HALL

  • Historical Significance:
    • Hosted Civil and Defence Investiture Ceremonies.
    • Venue for swearing-in ceremonies, including that of independent India’s first government in 1947.
  • Architectural Details:
    • Walls: 42 feet high, cased in white marble.
    • Dome: 22 meters in diameter.
    • Chandelier: Exquisite Belgian glass, hanging 33 meters from the ceiling.
  • Architectural Influences:
    • Designed by Edwin Lutyens with Western style and Indian elements.
    • Marble: Imported from Rajasthan and Italy.
    • Decor: Marble jaalis for ventilation and light.
  • Historical Changes:
    • Original thrones for the Viceroy replaced by the President’s Chair.
    • A 5th-century Buddha statue now stands behind the Chair.

ASHOK HALL

  • Historical Use:
    • Originally a ballroom.
    • Currently used for credential presentations by Heads of Missions and formal introductions before State Banquets.
  • Architectural and Artistic Features:
    • Chandeliers: Six Belgian chandeliers.
    • Paintings: Includes a painting by Fath Ali Shah and other works depicting royal scenes and hunting.
    • Ceiling: Decorated with Persian inscriptions and a forest theme.
  • Architectural Influences:
    • Mix of Victorian and Persian designs.
    • Fireplaces feature Persian inscriptions with ornate floral designs.
