NEWS – The central government recently announced the full list of the first-ever Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar (RVP) 2024 awardees

HIGHLIGHTS

National Honour

  • Recipient: Govindrajan Padmanaban
    • Noted biochemist and former director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
    • First recipient of the Vigyan Ratna, India’s highest science award.

Vigyan Ratna Award

  • Purpose: To honor outstanding contributions in science and technology.
  • Other Awards:
    • Vigyan Shri: 13 awards to distinguished scientists.
    • Vigyan Yuva: 18 awards for young scientists.
    • Vigyan Team: Awarded to ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 team.

Award Details

  • Vigyan Ratna: Recognizes lifetime achievements in any field of science and technology.
  • Vigyan Shri: Distinguished contributions in any science and technology field.
  • Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar: For young scientists up to 45 years with exceptional contributions.
  • Vigyan Team: For teams of three or more scientists/researchers with notable collective contributions.

Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar (RVP)

  • Objective: Recognize significant contributions in science, technology, and innovation.
  • Eligibility:
    • Scientists/technologists/innovators from any sector, including those working abroad with benefits to Indian communities.
  • Domains Covered:
    • Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Mathematics & Computer Science, Earth Science, Medicine, Engineering Sciences, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Technology & Innovation, Atomic Energy, Space Science and Technology, and Others.
  • Selection Committee: Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar Committee (RVPC), led by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.
