REVISION FOR PRELIMS – OCEAN CURRENTS
Pacific Ocean:
- Equatorial Currents System: North and South Equatorial Currents flow from east to west, while the Equatorial Counter Current flows from west to east between them.
- Kuroshio Current: A warm, west boundary current, also known as the Black Stream, regulating Japan’s climate.
- California Current: A southward flowing, upwelling-rich extension of the Aleutian Current along North America’s west coast.
- Humboldt or Peruvian Current: A nutrient-rich, low-salinity current flowing from Chile to Peru along South America’s west coast.
- Kurile or Oyashio Current: A nutrient-rich, counterclockwise sub-arctic current originating in the Arctic Ocean, flowing south in the western North Pacific.
- North Pacific Current: Formed by the collision of Kuroshio and Oyashio currents, circulating counterclockwise in the Western North Pacific.
- Alaskan Current: A northward diversion of the North Pacific Current, influencing the coastal waters of Alaska.
- East Australian Current: Transports tropical marine life to sub-tropical habitats along Australia’s southeast coast.
- Western Australian Current: A seasonal, cold current, part of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, stronger in summer along Australia’s west coast.
Atlantic Ocean:
- Equatorial Currents System: North and South Equatorial Currents flow from east to west, while the Equatorial Counter Current flows from west to east between them.
- Gulf Stream: A warm, wind-driven current splitting into the North Atlantic Drift and Canary Current, impacting Northern Europe’s climate.
- Labrador Current: A cold current flowing south from the Arctic, meeting the warm Gulf Stream to create rich fishing grounds.
- Canary Current: A low salinity current linking the Arctic to the North Atlantic, contributing to sea-ice export and freshwater sink.
- Brazilian Current: A warm current along Brazil’s south coast, merging with the cold Falkland Current, creating a temperate sea.
- Falkland Current: A cold branch of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current that mixes with the warm Brazil Current, influencing the temperate climate.
- Norwegian Current: A wedge-shaped extension of the North Atlantic Drift, flowing along Norway’s coast and feeding Arctic inflows.
- Florida Current: Flows around Florida, joining the Gulf Stream at Cape Hatteras.
Indian Ocean:
- Equatorial Currents System: North and South Equatorial Currents flow from east to west, while the Equatorial Counter Current flows from west to east between them.
- Northeast Monsoon Current: The Indian North Equatorial Current flows southwest and west across the Equator during the northeast monsoon.
- Southwest Monsoon Current: A broad eastward current dominating the Indian Ocean during the southwest monsoon season.
- Somali Current: A monsoon-influenced, Gulf Stream-analogous current with significant upwelling in the Indian Ocean.
- Mozambique Current: Flows in the Mozambique Channel between Mozambique and Madagascar along Africa’s east coast.
- Agulhas Current: The largest western boundary current, flowing southward along Africa’s east coast.
Arctic Ocean:
- Labrador Current: A cold current flowing south from the Arctic, meeting the warm Gulf Stream to create rich fishing grounds.
- Kurile or Oyashio Current: A nutrient-rich, counterclockwise sub-arctic current originating in the Arctic Ocean, flowing south in the western North Pacific.
- Norwegian Current: A wedge-shaped extension of the North Atlantic Drift, flowing along Norway’s coast and feeding Arctic inflows.
Southern Ocean:
- Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC): Also known as West Wind Drift, this current flows clockwise from west to east around Antarctica.
- Falkland Current: A cold branch of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current that mixes with the warm Brazil Current, influencing the temperate climate.
- Western Australian Current: A seasonal, cold current, part of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, stronger in summer along Australia’s west coast.
