IDAGUNJI MAHAGANAPATI YAKSHAGANA MELA

NEWS – The famed Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mela (troupe) in Honnavar taluk of Uttara Kannada district has received recognition by UNESCO as an organisation that preserves and promotes the cultural heritage.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The troupe was established in 1934 by Keremane Shivarama Hegde, an exponent of the Badagathittu style of Yakshagana.
  • The troupe is currently managed by Shivarama Hegde’s son, Shivananda Hegde.
  • The troupe was among 58 organizations worldwide honored during the UNESCO Convention for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • This recognition is expected to help revive and popularize Yakshagana, an art form blending dance, music, dialogue, and costumes.

UNESCO CONVENTION FOR SAFEGUARDING INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

  • Adopted by the UNESCO General Conference on October 17, 2003.
  • Came into force in 2006 after ratification by 30 Member States, including Romania
  • The purpose of the UNESCO Convention for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage is to protect intangible cultural heritage, ensure respect for the heritage of communities and individuals, raise awareness of its significance at all levels, and foster international cooperation and assistance for its preservation.3. Definition of Intangible Cultural Heritage: Refers to traditions, practices, rituals, and knowledge passed down through generations + Provides communities with a sense of identity and continuity.
