NEWS – Mithun Chakraborty, a national award-winning actor, was selected for the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award

  • Mithun Chakraborty, a national award-winning actor, known for films like Mrigayaa, Surakshaa, and Disco Dancer, was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
  • He was recognized for his “artistic prowess” and “enduring legacy” as an actor-politician who made a difference in many lives.
  • A three-member jury consisting of Asha Parekh, Khushboo Sundar, and Vipul Shah selected Chakraborty.
  • The award will be presented at the 70th National Film Awards on October 8.
  • MITHUN CHAKRABORTY
    • Born Gourang Chakraborty in Kolkata, Mithun debuted in Mrigayaa (1976), for which he won the National Award for Best Actor.
    • He later won two more National Awards for Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998).
    • Disco Dancer (1982) established him as a dancing sensation.
    • His role in Agnipath earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1990.
    • Formerly a Rajya Sabha MP with the Trinamool Congress, Mithun joined the BJP in 2021 ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.

DADASAHEB PHALKE AWARD

  • The award is named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, the pioneering filmmaker of India.
  • Instituted in 1969, the award consists of:
    • A ‘Swarna Kamal’ (Golden Lotus)
    • Cash prize of INR 10 lakh
    • A certificate, silk roll, and a shawl.

First Recipient:

  • The first recipient of the award was Devika Rani Roerich in 1969.

DHUNDIRAJ GOVIND ‘DADASAHEB’ PHALKE – FATHER OF INDIAN CINEMA

  • Born in 1870 at Trimbak, Maharashtra.
  • Studied engineering and sculpture, later developed an interest in motion pictures.
  • Inspired by the 1906 silent film “The Life of Christ”.

Career:

  • Before entering films, worked as a:
    • Photographer
    • Printing press owner
    • Collaborator with painter Raja Ravi Varma.

Film Contributions:

  • In 1913, he wrote, produced, and directed India’s first feature film, Raja Harishchandra.
  • Produced 95 films and 26 short films over 19 years, earning the title of “Father of Indian Cinema”.
