ENVISTATS INDIA 2024: ENVIRONMENT ACCOUNTS

NEWS –  The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the 7th issue of “EnviStats India 2024: Environment Accounts.”

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The report is compiled according to the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) Framework, an international standard for environmental economic accounts.
  • This edition introduces Ocean Accounts, providing a framework for compiling ocean-related data and assessing ocean condition parameters.
  • The report includes Physical Supply and Use Tables for Energy, utilizing data from the Ministry of Coal, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Geological Survey of India, and Central Electricity Authority.
  • Updated values of the Soil Nutrient Index compiled using data for Soil Health Cards for 2023-24.
  • Information on India’s taxonomic faunal and floral diversity, status of Leopard and Snow Leopard, and genetic conservation efforts using data from various ministries.
  • Compiled species richness from the IUCN Red List of Threatened species by taxonomic groups using spatial datasets.

Highlights:

  • Protected Areas: 72% increase in the number and 16% increase in the area of total Protected Areas from 2000 to 2023.
  • Mangrove Coverage: 8% increase in mangrove cover from 2013 to 2021, highlighting the importance of this ocean ecosystem.
  • Public Engagement: The Ministry encourages inputs and suggestions on the publication for future improvements.
