NEWS – Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has introduced draft regulations for the installation of Rooftop Aero Turbines (RAT) in various types of buildings. RAT allows consumers to generate renewable wind energy, helping to save on power bills.

Regulatory Framework

• Draft KERC Regulations (2024): Sets guidelines for installation and operation of RATs on rooftops.
• The turbines are designed to work in urban/suburban areas where wind speeds are lower and turbulent.

Benefits of RAT Installation

• Day and Night Power Generation: RATs can harness wind energy even at night, complementing solar power generation.
• Incentives: KERC plans to offer higher promotional rates for RAT-generated electricity to encourage adoption.

Installation Requirements

• For RAT with solar: Minimum solar capacity should be 1 kW.
• The total capacity of solar and RAT should not exceed 1.25 times the sanctioned load (e.g., 10 kW solar + 2.5 kW RAT for a 10 kW sanctioned load).
• For RAT only: Capacity should be between 1 kW and the sanctioned load.

Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

• Consumers must commission the RAT within 180 days of signing a PPA with the distribution company.
• Delays will result in reduced tariffs (90% of the PPA tariff or prevailing rates, whichever is lower).

Timeline for Finalization

• The draft regulations were published on October 9, 2024.
• Finalization will occur within 30 days after receiving stakeholder suggestions.
