Why in news?

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the Karnataka government will extend a 2% for sportspersons in jobs in all departments.

Highlights:

• Till now, only police and forest departments were providing 2% quota for sportspersons in the recruitment for jobs.
• Bommai was at a function organised by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports to felicitate medal winners at the Commonwealth Games held recently in Birmingham as well as 75 sportspersons selected under the ‘Amrut Krida Dattu Yojane’.

Why this reservation?

• To encourage sportspersons and provide them security, the government would extend quota in jobs in all departments.

What is Amrit Sports Adoption Scheme?

• Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai had announced many schemes on the occasion of the 75th Independence Day Amrit Mahotsav. Among these is Amrit Sports Adoption Scheme. Under this scheme, 75 selected athletes with the potential to become medal winners will be selected keeping in view the 2024 Paris Olympics. Amrita Sports Adoption Scheme has been implemented to provide all the necessary facilities to the athletes along with encouraging sports.
