NEWS: Union Home Minister announced that the Government's proposed technology-driven Smart Border Project will have a four-layer security mechanism to strengthen border management and prevent illegal activities along India's borders.
The project aims to tackle challenges such as:
- Human trafficking
- Cross-border smuggling
- Illegal arms trafficking
- Fake currency circulation
- Drug trafficking (Narcotics)
- Illegal infiltration

Smart Border Project
- A technology-enabled border management system that will combine modern surveillance technologies with local administration and security forces to improve border protection.
- The project will initially be implemented as a pilot project at 7–8 locations across India before wider expansion.
Four-Layer Security Mechanism
The proposed smart border system will consist of the following four layers:
- Advanced Technology Layerà Smart sensors, Surveillance systems, modern monitoring equipment, real-time detection technologies, cutting-edge border management tools
- Local Administration Layerà Coordination with district administration, intelligence gathering at local level, community support and monitoring
- Border Sentinels LayeràPersonnel deployed along border areas, continuous surveillance and monitoring, immediate response to security threats
- Security Forces LayeràAgencies such as BSF, border patrolling, interception of illegal activities, National security enforcement
