ADVANCED LIGHT HELICOPTER MK-III
Why in news?
The Indian Coast Guard Region (East) inducted the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mark-III, indigenously developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), in Chennai
Highlights:
- The ALH will be the first aircraft of the newly created “840 Squadron” that will be stationed in Chennai and will be the first ALH MK-III to be positioned in the Coast Guard Region East.
- The aircraft was received at Coast Guard Air Station, Chennai, with a traditional water cannon salute.
Advantages:
- By positioning the ALH MK-III in Chennai, the Coast Guard has achieved a multifold capability of Beyond Visual Range detection, using the state-of-the-art radar integrated with long-range imaging and identification using the Electro Optical Pad and Automatic Identification System
- The aircraft is equipped for carrying out target neutralisation with its mounted heavy machine gun.
- Through concerted aerial efforts, the state-of-the-art helicopter will address India’s multi-faceted marine interests within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
- The squadron’s operations area will encompass the entire Eastern Region due to its strategic importance and geographical location
- Its induction represents a tremendous leap towards self-reliance in the field of Coast Guard aviation, in line with the government’s push towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat
About ALH MK-III
- Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) created and developed the HAL Dhruv utility helicopter (HAL).
- HAL Dhruv’s development was confirmed in November 1984.
- The helicopter initially flew in 1992, although it took longer to build due to a number of issues, including the Indian Army’s request for design improvements, funding constraints, and sanctions imposed on India after the 1998 Pokhran-II nuclear tests.

The ALH MK- III is powered by two Shakti engines and is equipped with surveillance radar, electro optic pod, medical urgent care unit, high-intensity searchlight, infrared suppressor, heavy machine gun, and glass cockpit.
