ANTIBODY COCKTAIL FOR COBRA BITES

NEWS: IISc Bengaluru’s Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES) + Technical University of Denmark (DTU) developed an experimental antibody cocktail against venom from multiple cobra species, published in Science Translational Medicine.

SNAKEBITE CHALLENGES

  • Neurotoxins: Cause paralysis + respiratory failure.
  • Venom Variation: Composition varies across species + geographical regions.
  • Antivenom Limitation: Conventional Indian polyvalent antivenom targets the Big Four snakes but may not effectively neutralise all cobra venoms.
  • India’s Burden: Around 50,000 snakebite deaths annually, as reported in the article.
  • Delayed Treatment: Limited access to timely healthcare + antivenom in rural areas.

INDIA’S BIG FOUR

  • Spectacled cobra (Naja naja)
  • Common krait (Bungarus caeruleus)
  • Russell’s viper (Daboia russelii)
  • Saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus)

NEW ANTIBODY COCKTAIL

  • Source: Selected antibodies developed using immune responses in alpacas + llamas exposed to venom.
  • Mechanism: Combines antibodies to recognise + neutralise toxins from different cobra species.
  • Testing: Tested in mice against spectacled cobras, monocled cobras + two king cobra species.
  • Result: Protected tested mice from death even when administered 30 minutes after venom injection.

SIGNIFICANCE

  • Potential for broader-spectrum snakebite treatment.
  • May address species-specific limitations of existing antivenoms.
  • Limitation: Experimental; human safety + efficacy remain to be established.
