ARTIFICIAL REEFS
ARTIFICIAL REEFS
NEWS – In a first in Maharashtra, Mumbai is set to witness the installation of 210 artificial reefs in the Arabian Sea, near Worli Koliwada
HIGHLIGHTS
- Project Funding and Implementation:
- The RPG Foundation is funding the project, collaborating with the marine conservation NGO Kuddle Life Foundation for baseline surveys and installations. The project cost is Rs 62 lakh, with approval from the state fisheries department.
- Composition and Structure of Artificial Reefs:
- The artificial reefs are made of recycled cement and steel, designed to increase the sea surface area by 50-60 square feet per module. Three types of modules, including triangular reef fish, groupers fish, and well ring modules, will be deployed.
- Installation Process and Timeline:
- The installation of the 210 modules will take place near Worli Koliwada’s Cleveland Bunder, with transformation starting after three months as bacterial biofilm and algae form on the reefs.
- Benefits
- The reefs will attract ornamental and commercial fish species over time, benefitting local fishermen and increasing biodiversity. The project promises improved fishing opportunities and biomass for coastal communities
- As the reefs mature, they will act as carbon sinks, potentially contributing to improved air quality in Mumbai. This win-win solution aligns with environmental conservation and economic development goals
- The artificial reefs are expected to become a habitat for native species, act as a carbon sink, and boost the livelihoods of coastal communities in Worli Koliwada once they mature.
