ASEAN-INDIA TRADE IN GOODS AGREEMENT

  • Signed at the 7th ASEAN Economic Ministers-India Consultations in Bangkok, Thailand in 2009.
  • Came into effect in 2010.
  • Also known as the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
  • Scope and Coverage
    • Focuses on trade in physical goods and products.
    • Does not encompass trade in services, which is addressed in a separate agreement.
  • Related Agreement
    • ASEAN and India signed the ASEAN-India Trade in Services Agreement in 2014 to cover trade in services.

ASEAN OVERVIEW

  • Established in 1967 with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration.
  • Founding members: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand
  • Current Membership : Presently comprises 10 member states: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
  • Objectives and Functions
    • Aims to promote intergovernmental cooperation.

Facilitates economic, political, security, military, educational, and sociocultural integration among its members and with other Asian countries
