NEWS – The 4th Joint Committee meeting for the review of AITIGA (ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement) was held in Putrajaya, Malaysia
ASEAN-INDIA TRADE IN GOODS AGREEMENT
- Signed at the 7th ASEAN Economic Ministers-India Consultations in Bangkok, Thailand in 2009.
- Came into effect in 2010.
- Also known as the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
- Scope and Coverage
- Focuses on trade in physical goods and products.
- Does not encompass trade in services, which is addressed in a separate agreement.
- Related Agreement
- ASEAN and India signed the ASEAN-India Trade in Services Agreement in 2014 to cover trade in services.
ASEAN OVERVIEW
- Established in 1967 with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration.
- Founding members: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand
- Current Membership : Presently comprises 10 member states: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
- Objectives and Functions
- Aims to promote intergovernmental cooperation.
Facilitates economic, political, security, military, educational, and sociocultural integration among its members and with other Asian countries
