NEWS – The BBMP’s referral hospitals in Bengaluru are now providing newborn screening for the detection of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) for the first time

Testing Process:

  • Despite cost challenges, BBMP partners with a private firm to offer affordable newborn screening, ensuring accessibility for more families
  • Urine and blood samples from newborns are sent to a private laboratory for testing.
  • Results guide referrals to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health for specialized treatment of genetic disorders.

Pilot Project and Expansion:

  • Screening begins in six referral hospitals as a pilot project from April 7, with plans to extend it to maternity homes and all BBMP-run hospitals soon.
  • The project aims to benefit around 15,000 newborns annually, enhancing healthcare services for infants across BBMP facilities.
