• Philosopher, teacher and 2nd President of India.
• Teachers’ Day began in 1962 on his birthday.
• He chaired the University Education Commission (1948–49).

National Teachers’ Awards

• Instituted in 1958.
• Recognise outstanding contributions to school education.
• 2026 awardees represent 27 States, 7 UTs and 6 Central organisations.

World Teachers’ Day

• Observed on 5 October globally.
• Celebrated since 1994 by UNESCO.
• Marks the 1966 ILO–UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers.
