E-KHATA DATA
NEWS – BBMP Deploys Blockchain to Protect E-Khata Data
HIGHLIGHTS
- What is E-Khata?
- Electronic version of A or B Khata for property ownership documentation.
- Enables property owners to download the document online.
- Launch Date: Rolled out on October 1 by BBMP.
- Online Platform: Property owners can access e-khata on www.bbmpeAasthi.karnataka.gov.in.
Adoption of Blockchain Technology
- Support by NIC:
- National Informatics Centre (NIC) helped BBMP implement blockchain technology.
- Why Blockchain?
- Secure and fool-proof mechanism to protect data against hacks or manipulations.
- Data stored in decentralized “nodes” connected digitally via a chain.
- Inspired by systems used in cryptocurrency.
How Blockchain Technology Works
- Basic Functionality:
- Transactions stored in secure, decentralized ledgers called “blocks.”
- Blocks are linked in a tamper-proof chain.
- Each block references the previous one, ensuring irreversibility.
- Key Features:
- Digitized records stored across multiple nodes, creating parallel replicas.
- Transactions verified across all blocks.
- Manipulation or alteration of data becomes nearly impossible.
Practical Applications in E-Khata
- Mutation Verification:
- When mutation requests are submitted (e.g., after property sale), the blockchain verifies details.
- Flags errors like attempts to sell government land as private property.
- Fraud Prevention:
- Prevents fraudulent owners from downloading e-khata.
- Errors flagged during verification processes.
- Resilience Against Hacks:
- Even if one block is altered, other nodes maintain the original data.
Awareness Programmes for E-Khata
- Outreach to Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs):
- BBMP is conducting awareness campaigns citywide.
- Invitations sent to RWAs to educate residents on the e-khata system.
- Completed and Upcoming Campaigns:
- Campaigns held in Bommanahalli and East Zones.
- Other zones to be covered in the next four days.
- Public Response:
- Positive response in East Zone; over 200 RWAs participated.
- Objective:
- Simplify the application process for e-khata.
- Highlight its importance as a reliable property document.
