FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGICAL AUTOPSY (FPA)

NEWS – Forensic Psychological Autopsy (FPA) Used in Karnataka for the First Time

HIGHLIGHTS

What is FPA?

  • A forensic method to understand the mental state of a deceased person before their death.
  • Gathers psychological, social, and behavioral data from various sources.
  • Previously used in:
    • Sushant Singh Rajput case (Mumbai Police)
    • Burari deaths (CBI, Delhi 2018)

Role of FPA in Investigation

  • Initiated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Karnataka High Court.
  • Experts from NIMHANS assisted in conducting the FPA.
  • Objective: To assess whether the investigation process itself influenced Jeeva’s suicide.

Methods Used in FPA

  • Video Analysis:
    • Facial expressions, tone, and reactions during interrogation.
    • Changes in appearance (dressing, hair, dark circles, exhaustion).
  • Behavioral Observation:
    • Progressive disinterest in personal appearance.
    • Reduced responsiveness and signs of fear or mental fatigue.
  • Social and Communication Review:
    • Interaction with friends.
    • Changes in social behavior post-interrogation.
    • Analysis of phone calls to gauge emotional state.

Findings and Outcome

  • Jeeva initially appeared defiant but later became withdrawn and fearful.
  • The FPA findings were included in the chargesheet, which is soon to be filed.
  • Prosecution sanction obtained for further action.
  • Results are indicative, not conclusive – considered circumstantial evidence.

Significance

  • Marks Karnataka’s first use of FPA in a legal investigation.
  • Highlights growing role of mental health assessment in forensic investigations.
  • Sets a precedent for using psycho-legal tools in sensitive cases like abetment to suicide.
