What is FPA?
- A forensic method to understand the mental state of a deceased person before their death.

Role of FPA in Investigation
- Initiated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Karnataka High Court.
- Experts from NIMHANS assisted in conducting the FPA.
- Objective: To assess whether the investigation process itself influenced Jeeva’s suicide.
Methods Used in FPA
- Video Analysis:
- Facial expressions, tone, and reactions during interrogation.
- Changes in appearance (dressing, hair, dark circles, exhaustion).
- Behavioral Observation:
- Progressive disinterest in personal appearance.
- Reduced responsiveness and signs of fear or mental fatigue.
- Social and Communication Review:
- Interaction with friends.
- Changes in social behavior post-interrogation.
- Analysis of phone calls to gauge emotional state.
Findings and Outcome
- Jeeva initially appeared defiant but later became withdrawn and fearful.
- The FPA findings were included in the chargesheet, which is soon to be filed.
- Prosecution sanction obtained for further action.
- Results are indicative, not conclusive – considered circumstantial evidence.
Significance
- Marks Karnataka’s first use of FPA in a legal investigation.
- Highlights growing role of mental health assessment in forensic investigations.
