KIRTI CHAKRAS

– Four Kirti Chakras awarded, three posthumous

– Recipients:

        – Major Malla Rama Gopal Naidu

        – Colonel Manpreet Singh (posthumous)

        – Rifleman Ravi Kumar (posthumous)

        – DSP Humayun Muzammil Bhat (posthumous)

GALLANTRY AWARDS

    – Instituted by the Government of India to honor acts of bravery and sacrifice

    – Announced twice a year: Republic Day and Independence Day

History

    – Three awards instituted on January 26, 1950: Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, and Vir Chakra

    – Three additional awards instituted in 1952: Ashoka Chakra Class-I, Ashoka Chakra Class-II, and Ashoka Chakra Class-III

    – Awards renamed in 1967: Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra

Eligibility Criteria

– Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra

    – Eligible categories:

        – Armed Forces personnel

        – Reserve Forces personnel

        – Territorial Army personnel

        – Militia personnel

        – Lawfully constituted forces personnel

        – Nursing Services members

        – Civilian citizens

        – Police Forces members, including Central Para-Military Forces and Railway Protection Force

Conditions of Eligibility

    – Ashoka Chakra: awarded for most conspicuous bravery or daring act, not in the face of the enemy

    – Kirti Chakra: awarded for conspicuous gallantry, not in the face of the enemy

    – Shaurya Chakra: awarded for gallantry, not in the face of the enemy
