GOVERNMENT’S LATEST INITIATIVES TO COMBAT CYBER CRIMES
NEWS – In an attempt to tackle the rapidly growing menace of cybercrime in India, the Central government has introduced a range of new initiatives to enable greater data sharing between law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Central Suspect Registry
- Objective: Establish a centralized database of cybercrime suspects.
- Function: Consolidates data on suspects from across India, overcoming limitations of state-specific registries.
- Implementation: Managed by the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) in collaboration with banks and financial intermediaries.
- Role: Assists law enforcement agencies by sharing data on repeat offenders and cyber frauds.
- Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC)
- Objective: Combat online financial fraud and scams.
- Function: Facilitates cooperation among banks, payment aggregators, telecom companies, ISPs, central agencies, and local police.
- Activities: Identifies criminal modus operandi and coordinates responses to online financial crimes.
- Samanvaya Platform
- Objective: Create a unified data repository for cyber crimes.
- Function: Supports cyber crime mapping, data sharing, analytics, and coordination among law enforcement agencies.
- Design: Known as the Joint Cybercrime Investigation Facilitation System.
- Cyber Commandos Program
- Objective: Establish a specialized unit of trained cyber security experts.
- Function: Deploys ‘Cyber Commandos’ in Central Police Organisations (CPOs) across states and Union Territories.
- Plan: Train and deploy 5,000 Cyber Commandos over the next five years.
- Additional Cybersecurity Measures
- Pratibimb App: Uses GIS-based software to map cybercrime hotspots and track criminal activities in real time.
- Helpline ‘1930’: Dedicated cybercrime reporting number that received over 31 lakh complaints in 2023.
