HYDROGEN-POWERED TRAINS

NEWS: India's first indigenously developed hydrogen-powered train will be flagged off on the 89-km Jind–Sonipat section (Haryana).

ABOUT

  • A hydrogen-powered train uses Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells to convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity.
  • Replaces diesel traction with zero-emission propulsion, producing only water vapour as a by-product.
  • The 10-coach trainset is the world's longest and most powerful hydrogen-powered train designed for broad-gauge operations.
  • Hydrogen is produced externally, preferably using renewable energy (green hydrogen).

HOW IT WORKS

  • Green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis and stored in high-pressure tanks.
  • PEM fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen.
  • Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries provide peak power and enable regenerative braking.
  • A liquid cooling system maintains the optimal operating temperature of fuel cells.
