- Development and Origin:
- Igla-S is a man-portable air defence system (MANPADS) developed by Russia.
- Known as SA-24 Grinch in the West, it entered service with the Russian Army in 2004.
- Operational Capabilities:
- Can be operated by an individual or crew to engage and bring down enemy aircraft.
- Capable of targeting low-flying aircraft, cruise missiles, and drones.
- Key Features:
- Comprises combat equipment like the 9M342 missile and the 9P522 launching mechanism.
- Includes maintenance equipment such as the 9V866-2 mobile test station and the 9F719-2 test set.
- Technical Specifications:
- Effective range of up to 6 km and a limiting altitude of effective target destruction at 3.5 km.
- Equipped with a heavier, more powerful warhead with contact and timed fuzes for increased attack range.
- Warhead is a high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG) weighing 2.5 kg.
- Guidance system utilizes homing via infrared technology.
