INTRAOPERATIVE ULTRASOUND
INTRAOPERATIVE ULTRASOUND
NEWS – The Neurosurgery department at Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai, has recently procured a state-of-the-art intraoperative Ultrasound (iUS) machine to enhance the precision and safety of complex brain tumour surgeries. This marks the first installation of this advanced iUS system in India
HIGHLIGHTS
- Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) is a valuable adjunctive tool that can provide real-time diagnostic information in surgery that has the potential to alter patient management and decrease complications
- The neurosurgery team at TMC, led by Dr. Aliasgar Moiyadi, is at the forefront of applying iUS technology in India
- iUS is a cost-efficient technology, making it a viable option for resource-constrained healthcare systems. With appropriate training, it can become a vital tool for neurosurgeons.
Technology and Benefits
- Intraoperative Imaging: Intraoperative imaging is essential for the safe and accurate removal of intrinsic brain tumours. It allows neurosurgeons to track tumour remnants precisely.
- Navigational Aids: When combined with navigational aids (similar to a surgical GPS), the iUS machine significantly enhances the accuracy of tumour removal.
- Brain Mapping Techniques: The integration of iUS with brain mapping techniques, such as awake surgery, facilitates the radical removal of tumours even near critical brain regions.
