NEWS – IPBES receives the 2024 Blue Planet Prize, presented by Japan’s Asahi Glass Foundation, recognizing outstanding achievements in scientific research and its application
INTERGOVERNMENTAL PLATFORM ON BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES
- Establishment: Formed in 2012 as an intergovernmental organization to enhance the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services, promoting their conservation and sustainable use.
- Objectives:
- Provide policymakers with objective scientific assessments on biodiversity and ecosystems.
- Offer tools and methods for protecting and sustainably using natural assets.
- Inspiration: Modeled after the IPCC and Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, IPBES is not a UN body but receives secretariat services from UNEP.
- Membership: Includes countries like India, with the Plenary comprising representatives from member states and convening annually.
