NEWS – IPBES receives the 2024 Blue Planet Prize, presented by Japan’s Asahi Glass Foundation, recognizing outstanding achievements in scientific research and its application

INTERGOVERNMENTAL PLATFORM ON BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

• Establishment: Formed in 2012 as an intergovernmental organization to enhance the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services, promoting their conservation and sustainable use.
• Objectives:
  • Provide policymakers with objective scientific assessments on biodiversity and ecosystems.
  • Offer tools and methods for protecting and sustainably using natural assets.
• Inspiration: Modeled after the IPCC and Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, IPBES is not a UN body but receives secretariat services from UNEP.
• Membership: Includes countries like India, with the Plenary comprising representatives from member states and convening annually.
• Location: IPBES Secretariat based in Bonn, Germany.

BLUE PLANET PRIZE

• Award: Includes a $500,000 prize, highlighting achievements in ecological economics and science-informed solutions.
