JANATA MEAL SCHEME
NEWS – Indian Railways’ affordable meal scheme, which was launched in 2023 will be now expanded
HIGHLIGHTS
- Introduction of Economy Meal Scheme
- The Janata Meal, previously available at catering stalls in stations, is now offered on platform counters through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
- The aim is to address the challenges faced by passengers in unreserved coaches in accessing hygienic and affordable food.
- Expansion and Availability
- Over 150 such meal counters are operational across nearly 100 stations in the Indian Railway network.
- Southern Railway has opened 34 counters, and South Western Railway has opened five, with plans for further expansion.
- Meal Options and Pricing
- Options include Janata Khana (seven pooris and bhaji) for ₹20, rice-based economy meals, and snack meals at varying prices.
- Sealed water glasses of 200 ml are also available for ₹3 at these counters.
- Availability at Specific Stations
- Currently available at seven stations in Karnataka under Southern Railway and South Western Railway – Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction under Southern Railway and KSR Bengaluru, Yeshwantpur, Mysuru, Vijayapura and Ballari
- Plans to extend this service to major stations across zones, ensuring accessibility for passengers.
