Karnataka Sees Improvement in Groundwater Levels

NEWS:  Karnataka reports decline in groundwater extraction in 2025 → Based on Groundwater Assessment Report–2025

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Groundwater extraction reduced: 68.44% (2024) → 66.49% (2025)
  • Annual recharge increased: 18.74 BCM → 19.28 BCM
  • Extractable groundwater resources increased: 16.88 BCM → 17.41 BCM
  • Rise in conservation structures + good rainfall contributed

KEY FINDINGS

  • Recharge through structures ↑ 29.11%(0.81 BCM → 1.04 BCM)
  • Improvement in groundwater status across 11 taluks
  • Over-exploited areas → shifting to critical / safer categories
    • Example: Chamarajanagar improved from over-exploited → critical
  • Domestic groundwater extraction ↓ 0.58%
    • Reason: Increased reliance on surface water (Jal Jeevan Mission)
  • Water availability improving through year-round supply measures

GOVERNMENT MEASURES

  • Expansion of water conservation structures
  • Lake rejuvenation + treated water supply
  • Public awareness campaigns on water use

NEW INITIATIVE

  • Digital Water StackàUses AI + satellite data for real-time groundwater monitoring
