KARNATAKA UNVEILS STATE ACTION PLAN FOR CLEAN AIR

NEWS – In a bid to combat rising pollution levels across the state, a high-level committee has approved the Karnataka State Action Plan for Clean Air

HIGHLIGHTS

  • This comprehensive plan, aligned with the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), aims to consolidate existing measures and streamline efforts to reduce PM10 emissions.
  • The plan emphasizes the need for strict enforcement of regulations across various sectors, including industries, transportation, agriculture, construction and demolition, and waste management.

Focus on Bengaluru:

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by the state capital, the plan specifically addresses issues like:

  • Vehicular Pollution: Controlling roadside dust, soil dust, and vehicular exhaust emissions.
  • Industrial Emissions: Promoting the use of LPG and retrofitting old power generators to comply with emission norms.
  • Construction Dust: Implementing measures like vertical coverage of construction sites, establishing C&D processing plants, and raising awareness about re-processed bricks.

Key Policy Highlights:

  • Industrial Monitoring: Mandating continuous air quality monitoring stations and public disclosure of environmental data for major industries.
  • Waste Management: Promoting environmentally sound technologies such as composting, bio-methanation, and waste-to-energy initiatives.

BBMP Funds Utilization:

The Chief Secretary has directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to expedite the utilization of Rs 280 crore allocated under the 15th Finance Commission for air quality improvement projects.
