MODERNIZATION PROGRAM BY INDIAN NAVY
MODERNIZATION PROGRAM BY INDIAN NAVY
NEWS – The Indian Navy is undergoing a modernization program to improve the life, maintenance support, and capability of its warships
HIGHLIGHTS
- INS Beas, a Brahmaputra-class frigate, is the flagship of this conversion project and will be reintroduced to Navy
- The conversion of INS Beas started in April 2024 and is expected to take around two years, with completion scheduled for 2026.
- The transition to diesel propulsion is anticipated to extend the operational life of warships significantly.
- Diesel-powered ships offer easier maintenance and better working conditions for crew members compared to ageing steam propulsion systems. The elimination of issues like steam leaks and high temperatures in boiler and engine rooms enhances overall efficiency and reliability.
- The Indian Navy is also emphasizing the indigenous development of marine diesel engines under the Make-I category.
- Collaborations with companies like Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) are underway to develop these engines for future naval vessels, promoting self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
