NANO-MIND (MAGNETOGENETIC INTERFACE FOR NEURODYNAMICS)

NEWS – In a world-first experiment, researchers at the Center for Nanomedicine within the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) and Yonsei University in South Korea have successfully demonstrated the ability to control specific brain regions in mice using magnetic fields. This breakthrough, known as Nano-MIND (Magnetogenetic Interface for NeuroDynamics) technology.

HIGHLIGHTS

Technology Details:

  • Mechanism: Utilizes magnetic fields and magnetized nanoparticles
  • Capabilities: Precise activation of specific neural circuits
  • Advancement: Significant improvement over existing brain manipulation methods

Experiment Results:

  • Neuronal Activation: Specific neurons in various brain regions of mice were activated
  • Maternal Behavior: Activation of inhibitory GABA receptors in the medial preoptic area increased nurturing behaviors in non-maternal female mice
  • Feeding Behavior: Targeted motivation circuits in the lateral hypothalamus led to a 100% increase in appetite with inhibitory neuron activation and a 50% reduction with excitatory neuron activation

Potential Applications:

  • Research Impact: Enhances understanding of brain functions, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), and treatments for neurological disorders
  • Future Implications: Could lead to new therapeutic approaches and improved brain studies
