ABOUT NHTS

• First all-India household travel survey → rural + urban areas.
• Covers travel purpose, mode, distance, duration + expenditure.
• Conducted by NSO under Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
• Covered → 92 lakh households + 20.34 lakh persons.

KEY FINDINGS

• Students → 4% travel ≥1 km; walking is the largest mode (37%).
• Workers → 57.6% travel >1 km; urban mobility > rural.
• Two-wheelers → 42.6% of workers’ primary mode.
• Overnight travel → buses + railways account for 73.5%.
• Social, communication + religious trips → 70.2% of overnight household trips.
