NEWS – The Union government on Thursday launched the National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS) powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to help farmers to connect with agriculture scientists and experts by mobile phones for controlling pests.

– Farmers can take photos of infested crops or insects using the system on their phones
– Photos reach scientists and experts for identification and advice
– Helps in identifying pests and controlling them
– Aims to reduce dependence on pesticide retailers and promote scientific approach to pest management

– Addresses problem of excessive pesticide use

Implementation
– Will benefit 14 crore farmers in the country

– Technology will be sent to States for propagation through outreach programs
– Successfully tested through pilot schemes before release
