NEWS – India has developed and certified SEBEX 2, a new high-performance explosive.

HIGHLIGHTS

Development and Certification

• Developed by Economic Explosives Limited under the Make in India initiative.
• Certified by the Indian Navy.
• Tested under the Indian Navy’s Defence Export Promotion Scheme.

Composition and Lethality

• Uses a composition based on high-melting explosive (HMX).
• Substantially increases the lethality of:
  • Warheads
  • Aerial bombs
  • Artillery shells
  • Other munitions utilizing blast and fragmentation effects

Performance Metrics

• TNT equivalence of 2.01.
• Higher than the BrahMos warhead, which has a TNT equivalence of 1.50.
• Conventional warheads typically range from 1.25 to 1.30.

Future Developments

• EEL is developing another variant with a TNT equivalence of 2.3, expected in six months.

ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

• SITBEX 1:
  • The Navy’s first certified thermobaric explosive.
  • Ideal for destroying enemy bunkers, tunnels, and fortified positions due to prolonged blast duration and intense heat.
• SIMEX 4:
  • Certified insensitive munition.
  • Safer to store, transport, and operate.
  • Less prone to accidental ignition.
