SMART CARDS FOR DRIVING LICENCES

SMART CARDS FOR DRIVING LICENCES

NEWS – The Karnataka Transport Department plans to launch advanced smart cards for Driving Licences (DLs) and Registration Certificates (RCs) by January or February 2025. These cards will replace the existing PVC cards, which have been in use for many years.

HIGHLIGHTS

Current Scenario

  • DLs and RCs are currently issued as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cards.
  • While functional, PVC cards face durability issues and are prone to fading and damage over time.

Features of the New Smart Cards

Advanced Technology

  1. Embedded Chips: Cards will include an embedded chip for secure and extensive data storage.
  2. QR Code: The QR code will provide instant access to primary cardholder details.
  3. Laser Engraving: Information on the card will be laser-engraved to prevent tampering, fading, and chipping.
  4. Material: Made of Polycarbonate, known for its durability and robustness.

Enhanced Security

  • Tamper-Proof Design: Laser engraving ensures information cannot be altered.
  • Quick Data Access:
    • Scanning the QR code allows police and Transport Department officials to access basic details instantly.
    • A dedicated chip reader provides access to more extensive data, streamlining procedures for:
      • Traffic offences.
      • Theft cases.

Advantages of Smart Cards

  • Improved Durability – Polycarbonate material and laser engraving extend the card’s lifespan and maintain clarity over time.
  • Streamlined Processes
    • Eliminates the need for physical document verification at:
      1. Traffic checkpoints.
      2. Police stations.
      3. Transport Department offices.
    • Faster retrieval of information using QR code scanning.
  • Enhanced User Experience – Simplifies procedures related to lost or stolen cards.
  • Standardisation
    • Centralised printing at the Transport Commissioner’s Head Office in Bengaluru ensures:
      1. Uniform quality.
      2. Efficient distribution across the state.
      3. Reduced production delays.

Implementation in Other States

  • Karnataka follows states like:
    • Tamil Nadu.
    • Chhattisgarh.
    • Himachal Pradesh, which have already adopted smart card systems for DLs and RCs.
