  • Snowblind is a new Android malware aimed at stealing banking credentials by exploiting Android’s security features. It bypasses app anti-tamper mechanisms using ‘seccomp’ in the Linux kernel and Android OS. The malware repacks apps to avoid detection of accessibility feature use, injects code pre-seccomp to evade security, and uses accessibility services to steal data and remotely access screens. It disables biometric and two-factor authentication, particularly impacting Southeast Asia where users download apps from untrusted sources. Detection is challenging due to its manipulation of system-level security, advising users to install apps only from trusted sources and regularly update their devices for security patches

  • The Indian Army contingent departed yesterday for the 13th edition of India- Thailand joint military Exercise MAITREE. The exercise is scheduled to be conducted from 1st to 15th July 2024 at Fort Vachiraprakan in Tak Province of Thailand. Last edition of the same exercise was conducted at Umroi, Meghalaya in September 2019
  • BBMP has entrusted Bangalore Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) to oversee solid waste management. BSWML, formed three years ago and led by an IAS officer, will manage door-to-door collection, transportation, and disposal of waste. It plans to appoint assistant general managers, use technology for monitoring, and establish a command center. BBMP retains supervision of pourakarmikas and health inspectors but faces concerns over BSWML’s lack of statutory backing.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has partnered with ASEAN countries to establish Nexus, a platform facilitated by the Bank for International Settlements’ Innovation Hub. It aims to standardize global connections for Instant Payment Systems (IPS), linking India’s UPI with FPSs of Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. This initiative seeks to enhance cross-border retail payments, enable near-instant transactions at minimal cost, and expand connectivity beyond bilateral agreements
  • India has joined SERA’s Citizen Astronaut Programme, offering six seats on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket to countries without astronauts. Candidates, including Indian citizens paying a $2.50 fee, undergo STEM challenges and public voting for selection. Costs include astronaut launch covered by SERA and mission costs by Blue Origin. Voting allows campaign through mission profiles and social media, restricted by nationality for regional seats and open globally for one seat. The mission entails an 11-minute journey past 100 km altitude, weightlessness, and a controlled descent, promoting inclusivity with minimal training requirements.
  • The Global IndiaAI Summit 2024, hosted by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in New Delhi, aimed to promote responsible AI development and collaboration among international experts. India, as the lead chair of GPAI, emphasized ethical and inclusive AI growth globally. The IndiaAI Mission focuses on building a robust AI ecosystem with initiatives like compute capacity enhancement, innovation centers, datasets platform, application development, skills enhancement, startup support, and ensuring safe and trusted AI through guidelines.
