- China’s Chang’e-6 mission, an uncrewed spacecraft, successfully landed on the far side of the moon to retrieve rocks and soil. - The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has identified the earliest-known galaxy, JADES-GS-z14-0, formed about 290 million years after the Big Bang. This galaxy measures approximately 1,700 light years across, has a mass equivalent to 500 million stars the size of our Sun, and is rapidly forming new stars at a rate of 20 per year. The discovery, made by an international team of astronomers as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) program, highlights the surprising brightness and size of the galaxy given its formation during the universe’s infancy. Astrophysicist Kevin Hainline and the team discuss the challenges in understanding the formation of such a large galaxy in a short period and propose three main hypotheses to explain its brightness. - India has assumed the chair of the Colombo Process for the term 2024-26. The Colombo Process is a regional consultative forum aimed at managing overseas employment and contractual labor among its 12 Asian member states. It facilitates the exchange of best practices, addresses migrant issues, and promotes the benefits of organized overseas employment. Governance is based on non-binding, consensus-based decisions, with technical support from the International Organization for Migration. The forum also includes thematic area working groups focusing on various aspects of labor migration.
