SUBMERSIBLE PLATFORM FOR ACOUSTIC CHARACTERISATION AND EVALUATION (SPACE)
NEWS – A state-of-the-art Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterisation and Evaluation (SPACE) was inaugurated in Underwater Acoustic Research Facility, Kulamavu in Idukki, Kerala
HIGHLIGHTS
- Purpose and Setup:
- SPACE, established by the Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory of DRDO, serves as a premier testing and evaluation hub for sonar systems for the Indian Navy across ships, submarines, and helicopters.
- Key Features:
- SPACE comprises two main components – a floating platform on the water surface and a submersible platform capable of descending up to 100 meters using winch systems.
- The submersible platform can be easily docked with the floating platform after operations.
- Functionality and Utilization:
- It facilitates the evaluation of complete sonar systems, enabling quick deployment and retrieval of scientific packages like sensors and transducers.
- SPACE supports survey, sampling, and data collection of various parameters from air, surface, mid-water, and reservoir floors using modern scientific instruments.
- Research Capabilities and Future Prospects:
- The facility enhances Anti-Submarine Warfare research capabilities with advanced data processing, sample analysis, and well-equipped scientific laboratories for research and development in naval technology.
