Why in news? Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will host Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation to seek a roadmap to save the world’s biggest rainforest.
Highlights:
- The meeting of the eight-nation Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation will be held in Belem, capital of the Amazon state of Para.
- organisation’s first summit was held in 2009.
- Brazil will host 30th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP 30)
- Ratifying and implementing the Escazu Agreement (Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean) is the central part of governments’ commitment to protect the Amazon
- The Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACT) signed on July 3, 1978 gave rise to the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO)
