NEWS – BBMP is redeveloping 75 traffic junctions to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow under name Suraksha 75

HIGHLIGHTS

– Estimated cost of the project: ₹100 crore

– Project initiated in collaboration with the World Resources Institute in 2023

Objectives

– Improve pedestrian safety

– Streamline traffic flow

– Reduce congestion

Progress

3 junctions transformed as part of a pilot project:

    – Balekundri Circle

    – Town Hall junction

    – Maurya Circle

Design and Planning

Design partners and urban architects brought on board at initial stage + Focus on design elements to improve road safety, such as:

    – Raised pedestrian crossings

    – Rumble strips

    – Pedestrian islands and speed humps

    – Proper road markings and signages

    – Walkways

Implementation

– Multiple stakeholder workshops conducted to review draft DPRs

– Interventions at each junction unique and pragmatic

– Aim to complete work at all 75 junctions by end of 2024
