SWACHH SURVEKSHAN

• Annual cleanliness survey
• Conducted by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs + Quality council of India
• Assess and rank cities and towns in terms of cleanliness and sanitation
• Launched in 2016 as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA-Urban specifically)
• Parameters for Assessment: cleanliness, hygiene, and waste management
• Emphasizes the importance of behavioral change and community participation in maintaining cleanliness
• Cities are incentivized to prioritize cleanliness and implement effective waste management practices which may include certificates, funds, and other incentives to further promote cleanliness initiatives
• First survey was undertaken in 2016 (covering 73 cities), which had grown to cover 4242 (by the 2020 survey).
