UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)
- Establishment and Mandate: Created in 2000 as an advisory body to United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), focusing on indigenous issues related to development, culture, environment, education, health, and human rights.
- Functions and Responsibilities: Provides expert advice to ECOSOC and UN entities, promotes awareness and coordination on indigenous issues, and shares information on these matters.
- Role within the UN System: One of three bodies dedicated to Indigenous Peoples’ issues, alongside the Expert Mechanism and Special Rapporteur.
- Membership: Consists of sixteen independent experts serving for three years, nominated by governments and indigenous organizations.
- Outputs: Produces session reports with recommendations for ECOSOC’s consideration.
