UNFCCC 2026 NDC SYNTHESIS REPORT

NEWS: UNFCCC released the 2026 NDC Synthesis Report on October 27, 2026, warning that current climate pledges are insufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

ABOUT NDCs

  • Full Form: Nationally Determined Contributions.
  • Framework: Paris Agreement (2015).
  • Meaning: Country-specific climate action plans covering emission reductions + adaptation.
  • Principle: Successive NDCs should show progressive ambition.
  • Report Coverage: 127 new NDCs representing 154 Parties, submitted between January 2024 and August 2026.

KEY FINDINGS

  • Emissions Reduction: Global GHG emissions projected to fall only 6% below 2019 levels by 2035.
  • Full Implementation: Reduction could reach around 9%, including conditional pledges.
  • Warming Projection: Current NDCs + long-term targets could result in 1.7°C–2.3°C warming by 2100.
  • Net-Zero Targets: Most countries aim for 2050, with targets broadly ranging from 2040 to 2070.

POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS

  • Greater participation of local governments, civil society + private sector.
  • Improved climate planning, monitoring + accountability.
