NEWS – The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has released the World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) 2024 report, highlighting the key global trends in intellectual property (IP) filings. This report provides an overview of the rise in patent, trademark, and industrial design applications worldwide, with a special focus on the top economies driving these increases.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REPORT

India’s Growth in Intellectual Property Filings

  • Global Ranking: India has secured a place in the top 10 globally for all three major IP rights: patents, trademarks, and industrial designs.

Patent Applications

  • Fastest Growth: India experienced the fastest growth in patent applications among the top 20 origins, with a 7% increase in 2023.
  • Five Consecutive Years of Growth: This marks India’s fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth in patent filings.
  • Global Ranking: India ranks 6th globally, with 64,480 patent applications filed in 2023.
  • Resident Filings: For the first time, over 50% (55.2%) of India’s patent applications were filed by residents.

Industrial Design Applications

  • Steady Increase: India recorded a 4% rise in industrial design applications.
  • Sector Focus: The top three sectors for industrial design filings were:
    • Textiles and Accessories
    • Tools and Machines
    • Health and Cosmetics
  • Growth Trend: Between 2018 and 2023, both patent and industrial design applications more than doubled in India.

Patent-to-GDP Ratio

  • Significant Growth: India’s patent-to-GDP ratio grew from 144 to 381 over the past decade, reflecting the growing importance of IP alongside the country’s economic expansion.

Trademark Applications

  • Global Ranking: India ranked 4th globally in trademark filings, with a 1% increase in 2023.
  • Resident Filings Dominance: Nearly 90% of these trademark applications were filed by Indian residents.
  • Key Sectors: Leading sectors for trademark filings included:
    • Health: 21.9%
    • Agriculture: 15.3%
    • Clothing: 12.8%
  • Active Registrations: India’s trademark office holds the second-largest number of active trademarks globally, with over 2 million trademarks in force.

Global Patent and Industrial Design Trends

  • Global Patent Applications: A record 55 million patent applications were filed globally in 2023, marking a 2.7% increase from 2022.
  • Leading Economies: The increase in global patent filings was largely driven by residents from leading economies like China, United States, Japan, South Korea, and India.
