Green Energy Corridor Phase III will integrate 135 GW of renewable energy by 2032–33, supported by ₹1.86 lakh crore investment and 50 GWh battery storage to improve grid stability and reduce renewable energy curtailment.
NEWS: Union Cabinet approved the third phase of Green Energy Corridor to integrate up to 135 GW renewable energy by FY 2032–33.
ABOUT GREEN ENERGY CORRIDOR
- Transmission infrastructure initiative → connects renewable energy projects with the electricity grid.
- Renewable generation concentrated in high solar + wind potential areas → transmission needed to supply distant demand centres.
- GEC Phase III → 135 GW renewable energy integration.
RENEWABLE ENERGY CURTAILMENT
- Curtailment → reducing renewable electricity generation because the grid cannot absorb or transmit the available power.
- Better transmission → ↓ curtailment + ↑ renewable energy utilisation + improved grid stability.
PROJECT OUTLAY
- Total outlay → ₹1.86 lakh crore+.
- ₹1.36 lakh crore → intra-State transmission systems.
- ₹50,000 crore → Battery Energy Storage System.
BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM (BESS)
- 50 GWh storage capacity planned.
- Renewable generation ↑ → battery stores excess electricity.
- Generation ↓ / demand ↑ → stored electricity released.
- Transmission + Storage → greater reliability + grid stability.
