The Sustainable Development Report 2026 ranks India 94th—its highest-ever position—highlighting strong gains in poverty reduction, electrification, and digital infrastructure, while emphasizing persistent challenges, especially in Zero Hunger and 13 of the 17 SDGs.

Key Global Findings

East and South Asia recorded the fastest progress since 2015, led by India and China.

Global progress remains slow on:

  • SDG 2: Zero Hunger
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 14: Life Below Water
  • SDG 15: Life on Land
  • SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

India's Performance

  • Ranked 94th in 2026 (improved from 99th in 2025 and 112th in 2015).
  • Achieved its highest-ever ranking, improving by 18 places since 2015.
  • However, India remains behind Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

India's Strengths

  • Direct Benefit Transfers (DBTs) and welfare schemes reduced multidimensional poverty.
  • Progress in rural electrification improved SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).
  • Better digital connectivity strengthened SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).

Key Challenges

  • India is lagging on 13 of the 17 SDGs.
  • SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) remains the biggest concern.
