AWARDS TO CULTURE IN KARNATAKA
- Karnataka Ratna : Karnataka Ratna is the highest civilian honour of the State of Karnataka. It is awarded to a person for his extraordinary contribution in any field. It was constituted in the year 1992 by the Government of Karnataka. There have been a total of 9 recipients of this award.
- Rajyotsava Prashasti : The Rajyotsava Prashasti or Rajyotsava Awards, the second highest civilian honor of the Karnataka state of India are conferred annually by the Karnataka Government on the occasion of the establishment of the state on 1 November celebrated as the Kannada Rajyotsava. The awards are presented in Bengaluru by the Chief Minister of Karnataka on 1 November of every year.
- ‘Basava Puraskar’ : The Government of Karnataka honours those who are actively involved in the humaniratian works with ‘Basava Puraskar’ named after the great humanitarian Basavanna. The award includes a cash prize of Rs. ten lakhs.
- T Choudayya National Awards : This is a national award instituted in the name of Chaudhayya, the great violinist of Karnataka, who was known as the violinist(pitilu) Chaudhayya for his outstanding achievement in playing the violin instrument. The award is given to senior national artists who have served in musical instruments (Karnataka and Hindustani). The award consists of a cash of Rs. 10 lakhs
- ‘Kanaka Shree’ awards : The Government of Karnataka is happy to honor with the title of ‘Kanaka Shree’ for scholars / researchers / writers who have served the Dasa Sahitya as well as their visionary contribution to the life, literary message and society for spreading the message of the great Haridasa saint Shri. Kanakadasa. The award includes Rs. 5 lakhs in cash, Sri Kanakadasar’s bronze statue.
- Shri Nijaguna Purandara Awards : The government of Karnataka confers Nijaguna-Purandara Award for people with outstanding achievement in the field of music, in the name of Karnataka’s famous haridasa’s namely Purandara and Kanakadasa whose contribution includes keerthanas, ugabhogas and stalwarts of Carnatic music. This award was renamed as Nijaguna-Purandara Award by the state government on 14-01-2010. The award is chosen for those who have rendered invaluable service in Carnatic music and Hindustani music and vocal instruments. This award includes cash of Rs. 5 lakhs
- Gubbi Veeranna Awards : Dr. Gubbi Veeranna is the renowned householed name when it comes to the field of theatre and ranga bhoomi in Karnataka. The government of Karnataka established Dr. Gubbi Veeranna Award in 1993, for people with tremendous feat in the field of theatre and rangabhumi in honour of the rangabhoomi legend Dr. Gubbi Veeranna. This award includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs.
- Varnashilpi Venkatappa Awards: Karnataka is home to one of the greatest painters who glorified our rich culture and heritage through their painting works. The govenment of Karnataka established Varnashilpi Venkatappa Award in the year 1993, in the name of the great painter late Varnashilpi Venkatappa to reward senior painters for their contributions in the field of art and paints. This award includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs.
- Janapada Shri Awards : Karnataka state is home to folk arts. According to the opinion of scholars, fine arts is the source of all other forms of art. To recognize achievers in the field of fine arts, the Government of Karnataka commenced to give away “Janapada Sri” awards to reward people for their contribution in the field of fine arts in the year 1994. This award includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs.
- Shantala Natya Awards : Shantala who is the queen of Hoysala King Vishnuvardana is a prolific dancer whose contribution in the filed of classical dance, vastu shastra is immense. To recognize achievers in the field of classical dance, the Government of Karnataka commenced to give away “Shantala Natya Sri” awards to reward people for their contribution in the field of classical dance in the year 1995. This award includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs.
- Jakanachari Awards : Karnataka state is home to mesmerizing sculptures which can be witnessed in most of the ancient temples all over Karnataka. To encourage this fine tradition of sculptures, the Government of Karnataka in the year 1995 decided to reward people in recognition of the great sculptor Amarashilpi Jakanachari with Janakachari Award. This award includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs.
- Santa Shishunala Sharifa Awards : The award was instituted in the name of the great Saint Santa Shishunal Sharif, a proud santa and poet of Kannada literature, and the government of Karnataka has decided to give the award to artists in recognition of their contribution in the field of classical music. This award includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs.
- Kumaravyasa Awards : The Government of Karnataka deided to honour with the Kumara Vyasa Award for those who have rendered unique service in the field of gamaka vacjana, play, reading and storytelling. This award includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs.
- Pampa Awards : The Government of Karnataka has decided to honour with the Pampa Award for those who have rendered unique service in the field of literature every year. This award includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs.
- Kundanagara Gadinada Sahitya Award : The Government of Karnataka has decided to honour with the ‘Kundanagara Gadinada Sahitya Award’ for those who have rendered unique service in the field of literature hailing from the bordering areas of Karnataka every year. This award which includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs was started in the year 2010-2011
- Daana Chintamani Attimabbe Awards : The contribution of Dana Chintamani Attimabbe is noteworthy in the history of literature and culture in Karnataka. Thousands of books relating to Jainism were written during her period which was the most unique contribution to the world. This award was started in the name of Attimabbe in the year 1995, exclusively for Women poets and scholars to recognize their contribution in the field of literature. This award which includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs were started in the year 1995 by the Government of Karnataka
- Sangolli Rayanna Award : The Government of Karnataka confers the most prestigious ‘Sangolli Rayanna Award’ for the freedom fighters who have sacrificed their whole and soul for the protection and upliftment of their holy land, water, language and culture etc. every year commencing from the year 2013. This award which includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs were started in the year 2013 by the Government of Karnataka
- B V Karanta Awards : The Government of Karnataka in recognition of his immense contribution to the field of India’s celebrated theatre artist who made his unique mark in the field of theatre. Hailing from Mysore, Shri B V Karanth ( Babu Kodi Venkataramana Karanth), is a household name in Karnataka. The Government of Karnataka decided to honor the ‘B V Karanth Award’ for those who have rendered unique service in the field of theatre and performing arts (Amateur theater actor, director, technician, theater musician, and playback singers). This award which includes a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs were started in the year 2014
- Sangita Vidwan Awards : The government of Karnataka recognizes and rewards people for their immense contribution in the field of music conferring them with ‘Rajya Sangeeta Vidwan’ Award. This award which includes a Saraswathi plaque and cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs.
- Akka Mahadevi Awards : The Government of Karnataka has instituted the Outstanding Vocabulary Sivasharane Akkamahadevi Award in 2016 to honor women achievers and women’s organizations in any sector serving the wishes of Shivasaranyas. It is a state prestigious award, comprises a cash prizes of Rs.5 lakhs.
- Bhagavan Mahavira Shanti Awards : The Government of Karnataka has instituted the Bhagavan Mahavira Shanti National Award in 2016 to honor the persons and organizations who have worked hard and unitedly for the advocacy and implementation of non-violence, peace, harmony, people’s welfare, religious and cultural values in the society. This award which includes cash reward of Rs. 10 lakhs.
